Große Lobreden
Elton John führt einen beweglichen Tribut zur Prinzessin Diana durch. Ich kann mich erinnern, an als sie starb. Ich war mit meiner Mutter auf Ferien in der Ostsee. Wir waren in einem kleinen Hotel auf einer kleinen Insel, es regneten schrecklich die Zeit. Wir sassen auf dem Bett und paßten das vollständige Begräbnis auf, während der Regen draußen fiel.

Als Deutscher, ein großes Teil meiner ängste werden aus der tragischen Geschichte meines Landes heraus getragen. Ich genieße Elliot Smith, und es ist merkwürdig, seine Musik zu sehen, die mit solch einem großem und schrecklichem Stück Kinogeschichte kombiniert wird.

Garry Hill: "No Blood for Oil"
In his new show at the Gladstone Gallery, Gary Hill presents an installation of a sexy and Political nature. From revolving custom gold coins (struck with rude pictures and cynical Latin phrases regarding the art world) that are seen through the eyepieces of far-off white telescopes on birch wood pyramidal plinths, to the giant American eagle projection reflected in a pool of oil with a bar of gold in it, Gary Hill offers us the typical genre critique of power and excess (re: Bush, Saudi Princes) found in such films as: “The Godfather, Part II,” or “Scarface,” subtly diluted and “refined” by the typical Chelsea Aesthetics of Ms. Gladstone’s Gallery.
Mr. Hill, whose works are undoubtedly “Fo Sale,” seems unaware of the irony in presenting such didactic and political work in Chelsea. That is like being on vacation in Bogotá and saying you don’t like coke.
I think we can all agree that Chelsea has become nothing more than another empty institution; no less removed from the Chain of Production than Wal-Mart. Herein lies the root of Mr. Hill’s problems, and the demise of this work of art. While I did find some guilty, masturbatory pleasure from this installation, I am unsettled by his lack of respect for the art viewing public.
This work is weak and meaningless, and not in the good way.

Video Art: Edward Winkleman: Nice Guy
Edward Winkleman, author of Edward_Winkleman, and proprietor of Winkleman/Plus Ultra gallery gave an informative lecture at my school. He offered many tasty factoids regarding the workings of a cutting edge, trend-setting, contemporary house of avant-garde art products.
Some interesting information regarding the commodification of Video Art was shared:
- Video artists make money by selling DVD's of specific pieces including signed certificates of authorship. These come in small editions, sometimes just one, sometimes up to five. Different artists present these DVDs in different ways. Some make elaborate cases for the DVDs, some make elaborate gel-pen drawings on the discs themselves. Its different each time, based on the wacky creative vision of each individual artist. Some artists include a master copy of this piece, to be placed in a lock-box by the owner to insure their investment. Also, people who buy these pieces have to sign legal documents that prevent the dissemination of these pieces on such sites as YouTube. This raises a fairly interesting issue that I feel should be discussed by the hundreds of viewers of this blog as well as the art world in general.
What is the deal with buying video art?
Why do I put my own videos on YouTube, if there is no chance of making money from those puppies?
Can video art be shared on a website similar to the iTunes store, where people like Leon and other collectors can purchase them for a small fee?
Video art continues the Minimalist Project on the Internet. Where minimalist art by artists like Donald Judd and Robert Irwin reference the metaphysics of perception (,architecture,) and proportion in the gallery setting, video art can evoke a similarly transcendent experience regarding the architecture of the Internet itself, its vastness, the potential for connection and interaction, and its infinitely regressive nature.
When artists make videos and publish them on the internet, what is their responsibility towards creating the appropriate "art context" needed by some to establish such works as Art and not just media? Is the distinction still valid in such an insanely democratic atmosphere? If this shit isn't being sold does it still need to be called art? Does YouTube need to create a subsection just for video artists, so people know when to watch the whole video if something totally absurd doesn't happen in the first few seconds? Is it for the consumer to know when they are looking at a Ryan Trecartin (sic?) or Angela Dufresne to put that shit up full screen and to cross their arms?
I think this protest video made by Joseph Beuys does a good job of illustrating some of the political peculiarities regarding Art on YouTube. It is also super funny.

Louis Kahns Museum bei Yale
Auf der Weise zurück von New York stoppten wir in New-Haven, um irgendein Yale zu kaufen aktiv-tragen. Beim Suchen nach einem Platz, um ein mit Kapuze Sweatshirt zu kaufen, wir stolperten über dieses britische Museum. Die Außenseite war grau und weich-gesprochen. Nach hereinkommend wurde mir mit Glück wie dem des Anmeldens der schönsten Frau in die Welt gefüllt. Entworfen durch berühmten Architekten Louis Kahn, dieses Gebäude ist gerade erneuert worden und ist bereit zu Ihnen aller zu kommen erforschen seine waldigen und symmetrischen Innenräume. Der Rhythmus von Anteilen war einfach eine zu erfahren Freude, von den übergängen der körperlichen Skala von deuten Sie zu sehr großartigem an, zu den akustischen Veränderungen stellte von der mühelosen Handhabung der einfachen Baumaterialien zur Verfügung. Einen frühen Anstrich durch Lucien, Freud auch, enthalten, ein nettes Auerbach, und ein Bündel bürgerliche Scheiße, die mich kotzen läßt.
